LONDON London: Manchester City crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, giving City their first defeat of the season in all competitions and reaching the quarter-finals.Timo Werner and Pape Matar The goal kept the hosts in control of their round four tie in the capital. Mattheus Nunes fired home a superb finish in first-half stoppage time to boost Pep Guardiola's Blues hopes of a comeback, but they were unable to equalize in the second period And were forced to settle for a penalty.
Timo Werner got Spurs off to a brilliant start, which was made even better thanks to an equally impressive finish from Pape Matar Sarr, before the visitors pulled a goal back through Nunes on the stroke of half-time .
This could have led to a tense second half, but Spurs continued to create the better chances and Werner, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski missed good chances. City's best chance to equalize came in the final minutes, when Nico O'Reilly's effort was cleared off the line by Yves Bissouma, giving Spurs another famous win over City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. On the other hand, interim Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy led Manchester United to a five-goal win over Leicester City, including a superb long-range effort from Casemiro, who opened the scoring in a 5–2 success.
United scored four goals in the first half itself. Casemiro scored two of those goals, while Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes also got on the scoresheet. Yet at the break the score was 4–2, a very rare occurrence in our history, thanks to replies from Bilal El Khanous and Connor Cody. Fernandes scored his second goal in the second half to ensure that it would be a night to remember for Van Nistelrooy and the atmosphere remained lively. Substitute Amad was denied a strike of rare quality when his acrobatic overhead kick went wide of Ward's right-hand post.
Although Beindir had to be alert to parry Boubakri Soumara's effort, Amad looked to be on a mission to score at the other end. The Ivory Coast international fired a powerful strike into the side-netting after a one-two with Fernandes and then had a shot saved by Ward on the turn.
After Fernandes had a hat-trick opportunity at the Stretford End from Casemiro's lovely pass either side, Wil Alves and Steffi Mavididi forced Beindir to make more saves. No further goals, Casemiro blasted an ambitious last-gasp shot just wide. Spurs and United will face each other in the quarter-finals on 17 December.
