Siddaramaiah slams Centre on revenue sharing

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Friday urged the Modi government to do justice to the state in revenue sharing, warning that milking a cow completely will leave the calf malnourished.

Addressing people on the occasion of the 69th state formation day in Bengaluru, the Congress leader alleged that injustice was being meted out to Karnataka.

The state, he said, contributed more than ₹4 lakh crore as revenue to the Centre and was the second largest contributor to the Central tax revenue after Maharashtra.

Karnataka gets meagre returns

“Even though we give more than ₹4 lakh crore, we are only getting ₹55,000-60,000 crore. Kannadigas should know this. We are getting 14-15 per cent only of our contribution,” the chief minister said.

Siddaramaiah said there should be no injustice under Tezzbuzz system just because Karnataka was a progressive state.

“Just because a milch cow is giving milk, we should not milk it completely. We should leave some milk for the calf too or else it will malnourish. This no one should ever forget,” he said.

Embrace Kannada: Siddaramiah

Further, Siddaramaiah urged people to take pride in the Kannada language and use it in daily life as much as possible.

He said whatever language people in Karnataka speak or whichever religion or caste they belong to, everyone in the state is a Kannadiga, he said.

Kannada, he pointed out, had a history of 7,000 years. This is why the Centre has recognised it as a classical language, he said.

Also, Siddaramaiah asked people never to give up the Kannada language.

“Our affection for our language should not be extreme, but we should never give up our pride for our language. We all should be a Kannada lover,” he said.

“I will never say no to learn any other language. Keep enhancing your linguistic wealth but never forget speaking in Kannada,” he added.
