'Brat' is Collins Dictionary's word of the year
LONDON London: Collins Dictionary has announced “brat” – the album title that became the summertime norm – as its word of 2024. The word, used by singer Charli XCX as the title of her sixth studio album Defined as “characterized by a self-confident, independent and hedonistic attitude.” Collins lexicographers said on Friday that the phrase “brat summer” has become “one of the most talked-about words of 2024.”
Dictionary said, “More than just a wildly successful album, 'Brat' is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and 'Brat Summer' has established itself as an aesthetic and lifestyle .” Collins experts monitor their 20-billion-word database to create an annual list of new and notable words that reflect the constantly evolving English language. Other new and notable words for 2024 include “era” is, meaning “a period of one's life or career that is of a distinctive character.” It is inspired by Taylor Swift's world-conquering Eras Tour.
Other notable words in the dictionary's final words of the year include the growing movement against mass tourism, “anti-tourism”; “Delulu”, meaning completely wrong or unrealistic in one's thoughts or expectations; and “rodogging”, flying long distances without any equipment or distractions. Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, said, “Many of this year's notable terms have been popularized by Generation Z and Alpha, so we are confident We can say that this is the most mischievous word list ever.” Collins's word of the year for 2023 was “AI”, short for artificial intelligence.
