New Godzilla film in development at Toho with filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki

The city-stomping Kaijus are making their way back to the big screen. The Godzilla creator and Japanese studio, Toho is developing a new film in the Kaiju universe with Godzilla Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki. Last year, Yamazaki won the Best Visual Effects Oscar for his work on Godzilla Minus One. And he will handle VFX again for the next film in the Godzilla universe.

The Japanese studio Toho has been part of 33 out of 37 Godzilla films so far. It is worth noting that these are different from the Godzilla films that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment make in Hollywood. For example, Godzilla Minus One follows an erstwhile kamikaze pilot (Ryunosuke Kamiki) who develops PTSD symptoms after a near fatal encounter with the titular monster in Japan following the Second World War. When the giant appears again years later, it forces soldiers and war veterans to team up and save the country from it. Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki are also part of the cast.

It is unknown whether the next Godzilla feature will resume from the events in the Oscar winning film, but it has a cliffhanger of a climax.
