“You won’t see MS Dhoni playing all the matches for CSK in IPL 2025”: Ricky Ponting

Chennai Super Kings have retained MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for the Indian Premier League 2025. Former Australia captain and the current head coach of Punjab Kings, Ricky Ponting, feels that Dhoni will not play all the games and could act as a mentor for the franchise.

“He had his worst season two seasons back, but the veteran bounced back last year to leave an impact on the game. MS Dhoni would want to play the same role once again. You are not going to see him playing all the games of the season, and the franchise might rest him for a game or two.

“We shouldn’t forget that he has been facing injury issues for the last couple of seasons, but any team he goes to, he will be a mentor and leader whether he is playing or on the bench. He is important to Chennai because of the leadership he brings on and off the field,” Ricky Ponting told ICC.

Ponting was surprised by the release of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas by their franchises.

“I am surprised that players like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are available for the auction. It seems the players and the franchises are moving in different directions,” he added.

Pant has been with Delhi Capitals since making his IPL debut in 2016. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in the 17th season, but he was shown the door. Rahul had a fallout with the owner of Lucknow Super Giants, Sanjiv Goenka, in IPL 2024, and their relationship was beyond repair.
