How to apply for a passport? Here is a step-by-step guide
New Delhi: A passport is an important document for individuals. Every government issues a passport, which acts as an official travel document. It acts as a certificate for a person’s identity and nationality for international travel. Thanks to the passport, a person can enter and temporarily stay in a foreign country, access local aid and protection, and obtain consular assistance from their government.
Every Indian citizen who has departed or plans to depart from India must have a valid passport or travel document. The Government of India, under the Passports Act 1967, may issue different types of passports and travel documents such as Ordinary Passport, Official Passport, Diplomatic Passport, Emergency Certificate and Certificate of Identity for the purpose.
How to apply for a passport?
If you are looking to apply for a passport, you can do so online. For that, you have to follow the below-mentioned steps.
Step 1: First, through the Passport Seva Online Portal, you have to get registered. It can be done by clicking on the “Register Now” link on the Home Page.
Step 2: With the registered login ID, you have to enter the Passport Seva Online Portal.
Step 3: Then you have to click on the link that says “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport”.
Step 4: Then you will get a form where you will have to fill in the details and then submit the form.
Step 5: On the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen, click on the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link to schedule an appointment. Please note that online payment is mandatory for bookingStep 7: appointments at all PSK/POPSK/PO.
Step 6: You have to click on the “Print Application Receipt” link to print the application receipt which has the Application Reference Number or the Appointment Number. It must be noted that you do not need the printout of the Application Receipt and can carry an SMS with your appointment details as proof of appointment in the Passport Office.
Next, you have to visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO) or the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for the appointment with original documents.
