Ricky Ponting advocated McSweeney's inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test squad

With David Warner retiring earlier this year and Steve Smith set to return to his preferred No. 4 spot, Australia need an opening partner for Usman Khawaja. Players like McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris are vying for the vacant spot. McSweeney has scored 291 runs in his last four innings, including centuries in the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup.
