BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty recently courted controversy by making a comment targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Responding to an earlier statement by TMC's Humayun Kabir, Chakraborty's comments have sparked a new political debate.
The controversy is related to Kabir's speech in May 2024, in which he warned BJP supporters on religious grounds. Kabir had said, “You are 30 percent (Hindu), we are 70 percent (Muslim)… If you think you can damage mosques, we will drown you in the Bhagirathi.”
The Election Commission reprimanded Kabir for his statements, but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not publicly condemn it. To this Chakraborty said, “A leader says that there are 70 per cent Muslims and 30 per cent Hindus (and) he will 'cut' them and throw them in the Bhagirathi… I thought the Chief Minister (Mamata Banerjee) would say something. She did not say. “So now I am saying, we will (cut) them down and bury them in the ground.”
In the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chakraborty said, “I am saying again and again… we will do anything (to win the 2026 elections). I am saying this in front of Home Minister Amit Shahji sitting here – We'll do anything.”
The exchange has further escalated the already tense political scenario in Bengal, with both parties exchanging allegations and counter-allegations. Chakraborty accused the Bengal government of obstructing Hindu voters. In his comment, he added to BJP's claims that there is discrimination against the Hindu community in the state.
