There was no technical flaw in Gill's batting: Simon Doull
New Delhi, November 2 (IANS). Former New Zealand cricketer and now broadcaster Simon Doull had given a big statement in 2018 about two young batsmen of India. He had said at that time that Shubman Gill's career playing for India would be longer than that of Prithvi Shaw.
So far, Simon Doull's prediction has proven true to a great extent. Shubhman Gill played an inning of 90 runs in India's first innings score of 263 runs. Thanks to his innings, India took a lead of 28 runs in the ongoing third Test match against New Zealand.
Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill were the captain and vice-captain when India won the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Later in the same year, Shaw scored a century on Test debut against West Indies in Rajkot, while Gill took time to enter the Test cricket field, but now he has firmly established himself in all formats for India. While Prithvi Shaw has been out of the team for a long time.
“When you think about a young player who has the ability to change things in the middle of a series, it's quite impressive,” Doull told broadcaster GeoCinema. “I first saw Shubman in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Had seen and at that time there was a lot of discussion about Prithvi Shaw. I had given a very bold and big statement at that time that Shubman Gill's career would surpass that of Prithvi Shaw, because Prithvi Shaw had some technical flaws and Shubman was like that at that time. It didn't seem like he had any technical flaws.”
Gill missed his century by ten runs in the first innings of the third match of the home series against New Zealand but he has crossed the 800-run mark in Tests this year. Shaw, on the other hand, was left out of Mumbai's squad for the ongoing Ranji Trophy due to form and fitness issues.
