A man in Hanoi has been put under a police investigation after selling phones and accessories on e-commerce platforms without paying taxes.

Do Manh Cuong, 38, is being probed by Hanoi police for tax evasion.

The police and the Hanoi tax department found out that Cuong has been using several accounts on e-commerce platforms like Shopee, Tiki and Lazada since 2019 to sell goods, with a revenue at over VND160 billion ($6.32 million).

However, Cuong used several personal accounts to receive payments and did not pay taxes as required.

The police said Cuong failed to pay VND2.5 billion worth of taxes, causing a loss to the national budget.

Authorities have reminded Cuong to pay his taxes, but he did not heed the call.

Cuong is also accused of using several measures to hide his revenue and evade tax responsibilities.

Online vendors are required to pay VAT and personal taxes if their revenue is at least VND100 million a year, according to current regulations.
