Sunil Gavaskar said that if Rohit Sharma’s availability is not confirmed for the first two Tests in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 then the selection committee should name a new captain and the 36-year-old should play as a batter.

There are reports that Rohit will miss the opening Test or the second game due to personal reasons. Jasprit Bumrah, who is Team India’s vice-captain for the tour, will lead the team in Rohit’s absence while Abhimanyu Easwaran is likely to open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Sunil Gavaskar is not in favour of vice-captain leading India in the first Test as it could put him under pressure.

“It is important for the skipper to play in the opening Test. If he is not fit then it is a different scenario. If your captain is not available in the first match, then your deputy will be under pressure. It is never easy to lead a side. I read somewhere that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test and he could miss the second game as well. The selections should tell him to rest if the issue is personal.

“When you are done with your personal stuff, you can return as a pute batter and not captain. We are giving the captain’s armband to the team’s vice-captain for the tour. The cricketing legend mentioned that after a defeat against New Zealand, India need a captain to unite the players before the start of the Australia tour.
