How to Perform Kharna Puja of Chhath Puja?

How to Perform Kharna Puja : During the four-day festival of Chhath Puja, there is a tradition of worshiping Chhathi Maiya and Sun God. The tradition of Kharna is considered very important for Chhath Puja. This festival is also known as Surya Shashthi. It is said that the devotees who keep fast during this period, problems related to children and money are removed from their lives.

In Kharna, women observe Nirjala fast and worship Chhathi Maiya. It will be celebrated on Wednesday, 6th November. Kharna occurs every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.

Kharna means to clean and purify and to eat pure food. Kharna is also called Lohanda. On this day, purity is followed in preparing food and prasad.
Kharna falls on Kartik Shukla Panchami. On this day, Kharna food and Chhath Prasad are prepared.
The 36-hour Nirjala fast starts from the day of Kharna.
On this day, a new earthen stove and mango wood are used to make Prasad, on which rice, milk and jaggery kheer is made.
In Kharna, people keep fast for the whole day and consume jaggery kheer, ghee coated roti and fruits in the evening. Then the fast starts.
Even water is not consumed throughout this day. After this, when we eat food, we eat only Prasad.
The Kharna Prasad and the food that is left over is given as Prasad to other members of the household.
In the evening, water is offered to the Sun by going to the river or pond and after this the difficult fast of Chhath begins.

Chhath Puja

Kharna puja means purity. Kharna is celebrated the next day after bathing. According to religious beliefs, emphasis is laid on cleanliness of inner mind on this day. Kharna Chhath is one of the most important days of Puja. It is said that Chhathi Maiya arrives on this day, after which the 36-hour waterless fast of the devotees begins.
