Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have campaigned heavily to strengthen their claim of victory in the elections. Even in these last hours, Trump is holding massive rallies while Harris is also engaged in a vigorous campaign. However, now only the result will tell who has won. Voting in different states of America can start from 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm Indian time and end by 4:30 am on Wednesday. Counting of votes will start as soon as voting is over. After the counting of votes is over, the winner of the popular vote is declared, but it is not necessary every time that the candidate who gets the most popular votes is the winner of the presidency, because in America, the presidential election is actually popular. It is not the votes but the Electoral College.
Many times it happens in the US presidential elections that the projected winner is being declared in one state, while voting is going on in another. In such situations, sometimes it takes a day or two to get accurate results. After the voting of the electors in December, all the electoral certificates will be handed over to the Chairman of the Senate by 25th December. After this, the votes of the electors will be counted in the joint session of Congress on January 6, 2025, on the same day Vice President Kamala Harris will announce the name of the winner in the House.
What is Electoral College?
The role of the Electoral College is most important in the American presidential elections. The Electoral College is the number of electors decided for each state of America. To win the election any candidate will have to win 270 electoral colleges out of 538. Each state gets electors according to the number of representatives it has in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. At present, the maximum number of electors is 55 in the state of California, while the least number of electors is 3, which are in 6 states of America including Wyoming. However, 7 swing states have the most importance because unlike most states, their stand is not clear in advance and that is why these swing states are considered to be major 'battle fields'.

Presidential election formula in America
Electoral votes of each state in the US = 2 (Senate representation) + Number of representatives in the state's House of Representatives. Thus 50 states and Washington D.C. (who gets 3 electoral votes) together give a total of 538 electoral votes. To become the President of the country, a candidate needs at least 270 votes out of 538 electoral votes, which is considered an absolute majority. This system ensures that the presidential election is based on a balanced representation of the states and not just on population. In this way, small states also get proper representation.
