Sunil Gavaskar prepares Gautam Gambhir’s report card as head coach
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar commented on Gautam Gambhir’s performance as head coach of the national team after India lost 0-3 to New Zealand in the Test series.
The hosts failed to chase 147 runs in the final innings of the Mumbai Test and were dismissed for 121 runs. It was India’s first Test series whitewash involving three games at home. Gavaskar was asked to give his verdict on Gambhir’s coaching stint.
He said that numbers tell the real story. He reminded me that India lost an ODI series 0-2 against Sri Lanka. It was the Men in Blue’s first bilateral series defeat against the Asian rivals in 27 years.
“The results are enough to show what he has done as a coach. We lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka for a long time. And now we were humiliated by New Zealand. It is a big loss. The results are enough to rate Gautam Gambhir,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
The BCCI is considering curbing Gambhir’s powers in selection matters. He is the first Indian coach to be allowed to attend the selection committee meeting for the tour of Australia. However, the officials are now miffed with him after the series whitewash against New Zealand.
Even though his decision to select the players was accepted in the past, that won’t be the case now.
Gambhir used Mohammed Siraj as a night watchman in the first innings of the third Test, and his decision to change Sarfaraz Khan’s batting order is also under scrutiny.
