David Warner Named Captain Of Sydney Thunder
David Warner Named Captain Of Sydney Thunder: In a major development regarding David Warner, the former Australia opener has been appointed as the new captain of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Men’s Big Bash League (BBL) 2024/25 season. This confirmation comes less than two weeks after Cricket Australia (CA) lifted his lifetime leadership ban.
Warner was banned from holding captaincy and other leadership posts in Australian cricket in the aftermath of the 2018 Sandpaper Scandal in Cape Town. Last month, that ban was lifted as a three-member independent panel of CA expressed satisfaction that Warner had met all the criteria to have the ban removed effective immediately.
Taking this opportunity, the Thunder named Warner their skipper for the BBL 2024/25 competition, replacing off-spinner Chris Green, under whom the team finished at the bottom of the points table last season. Green will continue to be part of the Thunder squad.
‘‘C’ Next to My Name Feels Fantastic’: David Warner Named Captain Of Sydney Thunder
Warner said,
“Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through.”
“Leadership off the field is just as crucial. I want to create an environment where we can all take a break from the game, bond, and enjoy ourselves. Whether it’s over a team meal, out on the golf course, or engaging with our fans in Western Sydney, it’s all about building camaraderie and staying grounded.
“I want to compliment the way Greeny (Chris Green) led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season,” he added.
Having retired from international cricket, Warner is available for the full BBL 2024-25 season. The last time he led the Thunder was way back in 2011, and on his BBL captaincy debut, he smashed a century against the Melbourne Stars.
While he was banned for holding official leadership in Australia since 2018 by CA, David Warner led sides in the BPL, IPL, and ILT20.
Sydney Thunder will get their BBL 2024/25 campaign underway on December 17 against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra. They will then face city rivals, the Sydney Sixers, in the first derby of the season at the Showground stadium on December 21.
