Fake advertisements are being used to tarnish the image of Hemant Soren, a big allegation on BJP

Ranchi: Chief Minister Hemant Soren has accused BJP of tarnishing his image through shadow advertisements. Citing the report published in techjusticelaw.org, Hemant Soren has written that..

What is the allegation against BJP?

allowing the BJP and its shadow pages to violate election laws and its own policies on political advertising for Jharkhand elections. According to Meta's transparency report on political ads, more than Rs 2.25 crore has been spent on political ads in the last three months. Almost half of this expenditure is from the BJP's official page, which has spent Rs 97.09 lakh and received 10 crore impressions through more than 3080 advertisements.

Accused of spreading communalism through shadow account

However, shadow advertisers in favor of BJP on Meta are giving a huge increase in content, spend and reach. While the official page of BJP Jharkhand is running advertisements focused on government programs and election issues, a network of shadow accounts is promoting communally divisive and offensive advertisements. Our research has identified 87 pages that are actively running ads on Meta in favor of BJP. These shadow accounts have spent Rs 81.03 lakh in the last three months, which is almost equal to the expenditure of the BJP Jharkhand page. The shadow pages are getting almost four times more impressions than the BJP Jharkhand page, making one rupee spent by the shadow network making four times the impact of one rupee spent by the BJP Jharkhand page.

Why is the mobile number switched off?

Meta claims to have strict verification for political advertisers, but the verification information provided for these shadow pages does not appear to be reliable. Researchers checked the mobile numbers given on these pages on different days and times, which were always found to be switched off. Other essential transparency requirements such as website address and exact profile location are also missing or unclear. Advertisements containing dehumanizing images of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, including one with horns, were found on various pages in clear violation of Meta's policies and were circulated around Diwali with the aim of inciting communal issues.

Violation of Supreme Court orders

As ordered by the Supreme Court, all political advertisements require prior certification from the Election Commission of India. Additionally, there are strict rules on candidate spending, the content of advertisements, and any political campaign during quiet periods, which shadow advertisers, regardless of whether they are directly or indirectly associated with political parties, are ignoring.
