Resolution for restoration of special status passed in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Omar Abdullah said – Government has done its job.
Srinagar. The proposal for special status was passed by voice vote in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday. After this, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the Assembly has done its work. The Assembly has passed a resolution seeking talks between the Center and elected representatives for restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state. In this proposal, concern was also expressed over the unilateral removal of special status. Amidst the uproar, the speaker passed this proposal by voice vote without any debate.

Smiling, Abdullah told reporters outside the Assembly complex that the Assembly had done its job. NC MLA and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary moved a proposal to restore the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, which was revoked by the Center on August 5, 2019. The resolution moved by Chaudhary said that this Assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees which have protected the identity, culture and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The resolution said that this Assembly emphasizes that any process of restoration must protect both national unity and the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. BJP members, including opposition leader Sunil Sharma, opposed the proposal, saying it was not part of the listed work. He said that we reject the proposal. We were told that there will be a discussion on the Lieutenant Governor's address.

Speaker passed the proposal by voice vote
When BJP members kept raising slogans against the motion, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said that it should be passed by voice vote and it was passed amid uproar. As soon as the motion was passed, BJP members came to the well of the House. After this the Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House for 15 minutes. However, the uproar continued even after the House proceedings resumed, due to which the Speaker had to adjourn the House proceedings for an hour.
These parties including PDP supported
Members of PDP, People's Conference and CPI(M) also supported the resolution during the voice vote. After the resolution was passed, the ruling NC said it had fulfilled one of its manifesto promises. As the House met again at 11.05 am, BJP MLAs raised slogans against the Speaker. The opposition leader said that we have reports that you (Speaker) called a meeting of ministers yesterday and prepared the draft of the resolution yourself. However, Rather asked the protesting BJP members to sit on their seats.
