Important news for air passengers, new order issued on internet use in flight

WiFi services in flights: The Government of India has issued new guidelines for in-flight internet usage during flights. The government has clarified that passengers will be able to access internet services through Wi-Fi during flight only when the aircraft has reached an altitude of 3,000 meters (about 9,843 feet) and the use of electronic devices is permitted. The order said that this directive applies to all flights operating in Indian airspace.

Under the Air and Maritime Connectivity Rules, 2018, the government has allowed providing mobile communication services in Indian airspace only after the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 metres. This decision has been taken to avoid interference in local mobile networks.

 

 

Amendments to flight and maritime connectivity rules

In this regard, in the new proposed rules as per the Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024, the government notified the new rule saying, 'Notwithstanding the minimum altitude in the Indian airspace specified in sub-rule (1), the use of flight Internet services for electronic devices will be provided only when available.

 

This decision was taken for security in Indian airspace.

The government said the changes are aimed at maintaining safety and regulatory standards in Indian airspace. This will also balance the need for connectivity. Apart from this, passengers can use Wi-Fi services during the flight.
