Preparations for Chhath Puja are being made amidst double pollution in the national capital Delhi. On Thursday morning, the Central Pollution Control Board described the air quality as “severe” and the AQI in the city as “very poor”. At the same time, there is a layer of thick foam on the surface of Yamuna and pieces of foam are floating in the Yamuna near Kalindi Kunj. The people of Delhi are busy preparing for Chhath Puja today.

After seeing continuous foam in Yamuna, debate broke out in Delhi politics also. Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said that the foaming was caused by silting from the Agra Canal, but the Uttar Pradesh government rejected these allegations.
Apart from this, the Delhi government issued a notification on Wednesday declaring November 7 as a holiday on the occasion of Chhath Puja. This year Chhath Puja is being celebrated on Thursday, which was celebrated by people from Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. People performing Chhath Puja take a dip in the Yamuna while facing the sun and praying, despite the thick layer of poisonous foam on the river surface. But taking a dip in Yamuna water is dangerous due to pollution.

MCD preparations for Chhath
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said Rs 1 crore will be spent to enhance street lighting at six ghats in 250 wards of the national capital.
Each ward has been given an investment of forty thousand rupees to strengthen the street lighting around six puja ghats. MCD said that its electrical and mechanical department will deploy staff to do lighting work at these ghats. MCD keeps the Chhath Ghats clean and neat. Parking facilities have also been provided to provide relief to the visitors to the ghats.
Artificial ghats have been built
CM Atishi said on Tuesday, “Delhi government is constructing 1000 Chhath Ghats across Delhi for the Chhath festival, so that no one has to go more than 1-2 km from their home for worship.”
Atishi said, 'Chhath Puja, which is being organized on such a grand scale, has started in the last 10 years. Before Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister in 2014, there were only 60 Chhath Ghats in the whole of Delhi, but today after 10 years, 1000 Chhath Ghats are being built by the Delhi government.
On November 4, Chief Minister Atishi also inspected the preparations for Chhath. In a social media post, he said, “Inspected the ITO Hathi Ghat, one of the oldest and major Chhath Ghats of Delhi, regarding the preparations for Chhath Mahaparva. This year, under the guidance of Kejriwal ji, this great festival of faith is being celebrated with great pomp by the Delhi government at more than 1000 places across the city.
He also said that the officials have been instructed to complete all the arrangements for the convenience and security of the devotees at all the ghats including ITO as soon as possible.

The Delhi government told the High Court that one thousand places have been selected to perform Chhath Puja in Delhi, and said that if devotees are allowed to perform Chhath Puja in the river, they may fall ill.
BJP attacks AAP
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the High Court's comments. “The court's observations have exposed the government's claims about cleaning the river before Chhath Puja.”
The BJP leader alleged that hundreds of ghats built by the AAP government for the festival are not functioning fully. Delhi Congress president Devendra Yadav also attacked the ruling party, saying that despite the party expressing concern over the poor quality of air and water in the city, Chief Minister Atishi has not taken any corrective action.
