In 1996, Aamir Khan’s Raja Hindustani emerged as a blockbuster, earning Rs 76 crore globally. The film was adored by the audiences, and Karisma Kapoor was praised for her stellar performance and captivating screen presence. But did you know, Karisma wasn’t the first choice for the film? The role was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Yes, the revelation was made by the actress herself, who has received four film offers even before she won the title of Miss World. In an interview with Vogue (2012), the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil actress confirmed, “I decided to participate in Miss India to step back from the film industry for a bit. If I hadn’t taken part in Miss India, Raja Hindustani (1996) would have been my first film”.
However, destiny had her own plans and she eventually made her Bollywood debut with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya in 1997,a year after Raja Hindustani was released. In addition to Aishwarya Rai, Juhi Chawla was offered the role too in Dharmesh Darshan’s directorial. But as per news report by DNA, the actress refused to do the movie due to kissing scenes with Aamir as she reportedly had some problems with the superstar.
Made in Rs 5.75 crore, Raja Hindustani went on to earn Rs 76.43 crore worldwide. The film won five Filmfare Awards for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Music Director, and Best Male Playback Singer. Besides Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor’s amazing chemistry, the film is till date remembered for its record-selling soundtrack with hits like Pardesi Pardesi, Pucho Zara Pucho, Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein, and Kitna Pyaare Tujhe Rabne.
