Modi will not attend the World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit at COP29, scheduled for November 12-13, as per PTI sources.
- The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced an invitation for applications from B Pharm and D Pharm degree holders to establish ‘Mudhalvar Marundhagam’ (Chief Minister’s Pharmacy) outlets. These outlets aim to provide generic medicines to the public at affordable prices. Interested entrepreneurs can submit their applications through the official website www.mudhalvarmarundhagam.tn.gov.in, according to a government release.
- Over 500 petitions were submitted to Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, along with JPC member and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, on Thursday. The petitions came from farmers in Karnataka’s northern districts, who claimed that their lands were being marked as Waqf properties. Pal visited Hubballi, Vijayapura, and Belagavi, where he met farmers and members of various organisations. They raised concerns about their lands being claimed by the State Waqf Board.
- India on Thursday criticised Canada for blocking an Australian media outlet just hours after it broadcast the press conference of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the Canadian action, describing it as hypocritical towards freedom of speech. “We understand that the social media handles and pages of this particular outlet, which serve as important diaspora platforms, have been blocked and are not available to viewers in Canada. This occurred shortly after the outlet broadcast the press conference of EAM Dr S Jaishankar with Penny Wong,” Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing.
- The Maharashtra government has decided to take action against 257 Scheduled Tribe (ST) category students who were found to be practising religions other than Hinduism while still availing of the reservation benefits as Hindu tribal candidates. A special committee set up by the state government recently conducted an investigation and discovered that out of 13,858 students registered under the ST category, 257 were practising religions other than Hinduism. These students had originally obtained a Hindu ST certificate to avail of the reservation benefit but later converted to other religions. The state government’s office of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha issued a statement on Thursday, noting that this issue came to light during the 2023 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) admission process.

These provisions were invoked by the Italian government in mid-2023. Sinochem, which holds a 37 per cent stake in Pirelli, has denied any violations, with the Italian government given 120 days to conclude.
- The Australian government unveiled new legislation on Thursday aimed at protecting children from the harmful effects of social media, setting a world-first age limit of 16 for children to begin using these platforms.
