Microsoft has unveiled a major update to its Windows 11 operating system, bringing AI capabilities to its classic Notepad app. Available in preview, this new feature—called Rewrite—offers an intelligent text-editing option, enabling users to automatically rephrase, adjust tone, or change the length of selected content. Initially, this feature is available only to Windows Insiders in select regions, with a limited number of test credits.
Revamping Notepad with AI
Notepad, a staple of the Windows ecosystem since 1983, has long been a basic text editor. Its simplistic design has endured, providing users with a quick, no-frills platform for jotting down thoughts and editing text. However, Microsoft’s AI-powered Rewrite feature represents a significant shift, transforming Notepad into a more dynamic and intelligent tool.
Using an advanced GPT-based AI modelthe Rewrite feature allows users to effortlessly refine their text. By simply highlighting the text, users can right-click to select “Rewrite” or activate it with the Ctrl + I shortcut. Once activated, the AI provides options to rephrase sentencesadjust the tone for a specific audience, or modify the content length to meet particular needs. Users can also choose to rephrase only a portion of their text instead of the entire selection, offering flexibility for tailored edits.
Limited Access and Test Credits
As part of this preview phase, the Rewrite feature is currently accessible only to Windows Insiders in the US, UK, France, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Microsoft has allotted 50 test credits to these users, allowing them to experiment with the tool’s capabilities. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, along with Copilot Pro subscribers in regions like Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailandhave 60 monthly credits to explore the feature.
Enhanced Content Filtering for Safe Usage
To ensure safe and responsible use, Microsoft has integrated pre-built content filtering mechanisms into the AI. These filters screen out any harmful, offensive, or inappropriate language, reinforcing Microsoft’s commitment to providing a secure user experience. Furthermore, all Rewrite requests are processed through Azure’s cloud-based serviceswhich do not store or retain any user-generated text after processing, prioritizing privacy and data security.
