A team of Indian scientists has discovered a new way to treat diabetes. They have created a protein that can prevent the damage caused by diabetes. Researchers have discovered a special protein, IL-35, which reduces cells that produce chemicals that cause inflammation. This reduces the effects of pancreatic cells. This process contributes positively and significantly to type 1 diabetes and autoimmune diabetes mellitus.
Researchers from the Institute for Advanced Study in Science and Technology under the Central Government have made this discovery. According to the researchers, these findings mean that IL-35 protects the immune system. It also provides a new treatment option for diabetes. However, more studies are needed to understand this entire mechanism and advance IL-35-based therapeutics into clinical trials.
What do researchers say?
Researchers say children and adolescents in developing countries around the world are being affected by the diabetes epidemic. In such a situation, effective treatment of diabetes is the need of the hour. IL-35 is a specific chain protein encoded by the IL-12A and EBI-3 genes. According to the research, this discovery has increased scientists' interest in IL-35, especially in new type-1 and autoimmune diabetes treatments.
about the study
The team led by Dr. Ashish Bala, Director and Professors Ashish K Mukherjee and Ratul Chakraborty at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (Institute for Advanced Study in Science and Technology), Guwahati, an autonomous institute under the Government of India, developed the IL-35. Network pharmacology analysis of related genes, gene-disease compatibility and detailed experiment review were performed. This analysis identified five disease-interacting genes associated with immune-inflammation, auto-immunity, neoplastic and endocrine disorders.
What IL-35 can help with:
According to researchers, IL-35 helps prevent type 1 and autoimmune diabetes. It controls macrophage activation, T-cell proteins, and regulatory B cells. IL-35 prevented pancreatic beta cells from influencing immune cells. Additionally, IL-35 reduced specific immune cells that produce inflammatory chemicals. These reduce the effects of pancreatic cells, which are important contributors to type 1 diabetes and autoimmune diabetes mellitus.
