Issue of red vs white onion looms large in Maharashtra elections, Jairam Ramesh said – 'Non biological' PM should tell 'Why preference is given to white onion producing farmers of Gujarat?
Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking votes for Mahayuti in Maharashtra rally. Addressing the Dhule rally, PM Modi said that the promise of Mahayuti has been excellent. He said that Mahayuti has fulfilled what it promised, but some people are doing the business of throwing dust in their eyes. He said that there is something for everyone in our pledge, but Maha Aghadi's vehicle has neither brake nor wheel, hence they are doing politics of loot and lies. Earlier, Congress has asked some difficult questions while attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress leaders have asked why white onion producing farmers of Gujarat are being given preference compared to red onion producing farmers of Maharashtra? Why has Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) weakened the forest rights of tribals in Maharashtra? Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has raised these questions before Prime Minister Modi's rallies in Dhule and Nashik. He asked why white onion producing farmers of Gujarat are being given preference compared to red onion producing farmers of Maharashtra?
Congress General Secretary said that onion farmers of Maharashtra are troubled by the restrictions imposed on onion export by the Modi Government from December 2023. He said that during the onion cultivation season, farmers of the state faced inadequate rainfall and water crisis and most of the farmers were able to produce only 50 percent of their normal crop.
Ramesh said that when the onion crop was ready, farmers faced arbitrarily imposed export restrictions, which led to very low selling prices. As a result, farmers suffered huge losses. After this the Central Government allowed the export of white onion, which is mainly grown in Gujarat.
He said that farmers of Maharashtra, who mainly cultivate red onion, were deprived of it for months. Former Union Minister Ramesh said that the ban on export of onion has been lifted but 20 percent duty on export is still applicable. Ramesh said in his post on 'X' that 'Can the 'non-biological' Prime Minister explain why he showed favoritism? Why did he ignore the onion farmers of Maharashtra so much, while giving priority to the concerns of the onion farmers of Gujarat?

He also asked why BJP weakened the forest rights of tribals in Maharashtra. Ramesh said that in 2006, Congress passed the revolutionary Forest Rights Act (FRA), which gave tribal and forest dwelling communities the legal right to manage their own forests and derive economic benefits from the forest produce they collect.
The Congress general secretary alleged that the BJP government had obstructed the implementation of FRA, due to which lakhs of tribals were being deprived of its benefits. They claimed that only 52 percent (2,06,620 claims) of the 4,01,046 individual claims filed have been approved, and only 23.5 percent (11,769 square kilometers) of the 50,045 square kilometers eligible for distributed land ownership community rights. Covers only.
Ramesh said why has the Mahayuti Government of Maharashtra failed to provide their rights to the tribal communities? The Congress General Secretary also asked why Mahayuti did not conduct Nashik Municipal Corporation elections. He said that the failure of the Mahayuti government to conduct elections to the municipal corporations of the state, including Nashik Municipal Corporation, is a major attack on democracy and the rights of the citizens of Nashik.
Ramesh said that the government claims that the elections are being delayed due to issues like OBC reservation and ward delimitation, but the reality is that the Mahayuti was afraid of facing the voters as it feared defeat. Because, his image will be tarnished before the assembly elections to be held this year.
He said that in the absence of elected representatives, the citizens of Nashik are struggling to make their voices heard and get their grievances resolved. Ramesh asked why BJP betrayed the people of Nashik? His comment has come amid the ongoing campaign for the assembly elections to be held in Maharashtra on November 20. Counting of votes will take place on November 23.
