Who is Benu Gopal Bangur?

Benu Gopal Bangur is a Marwari and hails from the Rajasthan. Being a Marwari, business runs in his blood. He was born on January 1, 1931, into a family known for its business prowess. After completing his schooling, Benu went to the University of Calcutta and completed his graduation in Commerce.

His family’s business roots go back to the late 1800s. His grandfather, Mungee Ram Bangur, alongside his brother Ram Coowar Bangur, laid the foundation of what later transformed into the grand Bangur business dynasty. Approaching the fifties and sixties, the Bangur clan ascended to being one of the most recognised business families in India, spreading their clout progressively through a range of industries.

The Birth Of Shree Cement

Shree Cement was founded in 1979 in Jaipur. Its headquarters later moved to Kolkata. In the 1990s, the Bangur empire was divided among Mungee Ram Bangur’s grandsons – Kumar Bangur, Benu Gopal Bangur, Balbhadra Das Bangur, Niwas Bangur, and Ram’s grandson, Laxmi Niwas Bangur.

Shree Cement was taken over by Benu Gopal who led it to new heights, making it India’s leading cement company.

The 92-year-old leader of Shree Cement decided to step down from his chairmanship role in October 2022. His legacy was taken up by his son, Hari Mohan Bangur, an accomplished chemical engineer who holds his Alma Mater in IIT Bombay. The lineage doesn’t stop there, as Prashant Bangur, the grandson of the former chairman and son of Hari, also holds a significant position in the company. Equipped with an MBA in finance and logistics from the prestigious Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and a Mathematics Honours degree from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, Prashant contributes to the company as the Vice Chairman.

Benu Gopal is enjoying his retirement life and resides in a luxurious mansion in Kolkata’s posh area. the mansion spans more than 51,000 square feet area and has home theatre and gym.
