Indian students protest against debate on Kashmir in Oxford Union Society
London: A group of Indian students raised slogans and displayed placards in protest against a debate on Kashmir organized at the Oxford Union Society of Oxford University. The group said that in this debate, speakers with links to terrorism were given the platform.
Zafar Khan of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and Muzammil Ayub Thakur of the World Kashmir Freedom Movement, speaking in favor of a resolution to 'view Kashmir as an independent state' at Oxford University on Thursday evening. Also gave speech.
In March this year, India had extended the ban on JKLF led by terrorism accused Yasin Malik for another five years. Slogans like 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Oxford Union stands with terrorism' were raised during the protests. Indian Oxford Union member Adarsh Mishra intervened during the debate and said that JKLF is a terrorist organization.
According to a video shared on 'X' by community organization 'Insight UK', Mishra can be heard saying. I do not trust this platform and have moved a no-confidence motion against the President of the Oxford Union.
Mishra said that Zafar Khan and Muzammil Ayub Thakur were working as puppets for Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and Pakistan. 'Insight UK' is one of the groups supporting the Indian student-led protest at the university.
Oxford Union was contacted for comment on this development, but did not immediately receive a response. Indian expatriate organizations rallied against the debate, including the Oxford Hindu Society. A formal letter was also issued to Oxford Union to cancel the program.
Said in the letter of Oxford Hindu Society. It is noteworthy that both these speakers have been involved in spreading anti-Hindu hatred and are representing organizations that have links with spreading hatred against Hindu minorities in the UK as well as in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The letter said that Hindu students feel horrified and disappointed that the Oxford Union has invited a person associated with JKLF – who has a record of attacking Hindus. Insight UK's letter to the Oxford Union said the Kashmir region has been the target of terrorism for decades, leading to the forced migration of thousands of Kashmiri Hindus and untold suffering.
Kashmir is considered an integral part of India internationally and any debate questioning it is a challenge to India's sovereignty. Oxford Union was founded in 1823. There has been vigorous debate here on various topics. (agency)
