“Highest total in an overseas country, first player to hit three T20I hundreds, two tons in one innings”: Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma register five major records

Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson were unstoppable in the fourth and final T20I against South Africa. They hit individual hundreds and shared and unbeaten partnership of 210 runs at a strike rate 226 for the second wicket.

Tilak scored an 120 not off 47 balls, with the help of 10 sixes and 9 fours. His recorded a strike rate of 255.31. On the other hand, the 30-year-old Samson amassed an unbeaten 109 runs off 56 balls, including nine sixes and six fours. The duo scripted five major records.

1. First batter to smash three T20I hundreds in a calendar year

111, 107 and 109 are Sanju Samson’s scores in the last five T20Is. He hit his maiden century in the third and final match of the series against Bangladesh. In the series opener against South Africa, Sanju managed 107. However, he registered two consecutive ducks in the next two games. He returned to form in last encounter and struck a magnificent hundred.

2. Highest team total in an overseas country

The Men in Blue posted 283/1 in 20 overs to complete their highest total in an overseas country. Their previous best was 244/4 against the West Indies in Florida.

3. Two hundreds in a T20I innings

It is the first time in the history that two hundreds were recorded in a T20I innings among the top ten teams. If we take the associate and minnow nations into consideration, it was the third instance.

4. Highest partnership for the second wicket

Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma added 210 runs. It is the highest partnership for the second wicket in the history of the format. The previous best of 193 runs was scripted by Michael Levitt (135) and Sybrand Engelbrecht (75) of the Netherlands against Namibia on February 29 in 2024.

5. Most sixes in the innings

India hit 23 sixes in their innings, a new record. The previous best of 22 maximums came against Bangladesh on October 12 in 2024.
