Liverpool transfer news: Reds ‘make enquiry’ for £21m star as they look to take advantage of Lyon’s financial woes

Liverpool reportedly enquire over the availability of attacker Rayan Cherki, who could be sold to help Lyon improve their perilous financial situation.

Liverpool have reportedly submitted an enquiry over a potential deal for Lyon star Rayan Cherki.

On Friday, France's Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG) announced that Lyon have been provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 due to their perilous financial situation.

Lyon will have how to demonstrate an improved economic outlook if they are to avoid being relegated at the end of the season.

As a result, the French side will likely have to look at the prospect of selling some of their prized assets in an effort to raise crucial funds.

Liverpool make enquiry for Lyon star

Cherki is one of those who is likely to attract interest despite only signing a new contract with Lyon in the summer.

Liverpool have previously been linked with Cherki, and according to The Teamthe Reds have made a fresh enquiry over a potential deal for the 21-year-old.

The playmaker, who is under contract until June 2026, could be available for the bargain price of €25m (£21m).

Lyon are hoping to retain Cherki’s services until the end of the season, but their financial situation could force them to consider a January sale.

Arne Slot‘s side are not the only club showing an interest, with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid said to be among Cherki’s admirers.

Lyon’s talented attacker

Cherki may only be 21 but he has already made 152 senior appearances for Lyon, scoring 19 goals and providing 28 assists.

The Lyon academy product has featured in 11 competitive matches during the current campaign, contributing two goals and three assists.

Cherki is still waiting for his first call-up to the France senior side, but he is currently part of the nations’ under-21 set-up.

The attacker registered a goal and an assist in Friday’s 2-2 draw against Italy Under-21s, taking his tally to 12 goals and seven assists in 21 appearances for France’s Under-21 side.

Cherki would offer his potential suitors useful versatility, having proven he can operate as an attacking midfielder as well as a wide man on either flank.
