Expert tips to make your home pollution-free post festive season
New Delhi: As pollution levels rise, maintaining a healthier home becomes a priority for ensuring your well-being. The air quality outdoors directly affects the air you breathe indoors, making it essential to adopt measures that promote a cleaner, safer living space. A healthier home not only reduces your exposure to pollutants but also supports your overall health and immunity during challenging seasons.
While we often focus on outdoor air quality, it’s crucial to remember that indoor air quality is equally important, especially post-Diwali. Sam Railton, Dyson Engineer says, “By spending more time indoors during the colder months, our day-to-day activities increase the level of indoor pollutants – from cooking and cleaning to using personal care products like spray-on deodorant.”
He went on to say that investing in home cleaning and air purification technologies is important during peak pollution season. These devices help maintain a healthy indoor environment, minimise exposure to allergens and can help manage your indoor air quality.
Ways to make your home pollution and dirt-free
- Stop pollutants at the door: Pollutants can enter your home in several ways. When outdoor pollution levels are high, its important to close doors and windows to help keep pollutants out. Additionally, pollution can come in on clothes and shoes, so removing these items before entering your home can help reduce indoor pollution.
- Improve airflow: While sealing your home can help limit pollutants, it’s essential to allow fresh air in—especially in areas with combustion appliances, such as kitchens with gas stoves or rooms with fireplaces. Strategic window openings, even for short periods, can clear out indoor pollutants.
- Capture airborne dust with air purifiers: Beyond simply removing visible dust on surfaces, consider an air purifier with a fully sealed HEPA filter to effectively capture airborne dust particles, allergens, and other microscopic pollutants. Additionally, setting your purifier to auto mode allows the machine to automatically adjust airflow levels based on room pollution levels, increasing airflow when the AQI is high and reducing it once the air has cleared.
- Deep clean with decluttering and powerful vacuuming: Dust and allergens accumulate on surfaces and clutter. Regularly decluttering and cleaning surfaces can significantly improve air quality. Vacuuming is essential for removing not just visible dust but also hidden allergens and irritants embedded in carpets, rugs, and upholstery.
- Opt for a vacuum cleaner with strong suction, HEPA filtration to trap fine particles, and specialised attachments to reach challenging areas like crevices and upholstery.
- Don’t forget the soft surfaces: Beds, couches, and curtains can harbour dust mites and other allergens. Regularly vacuuming these surfaces with an upholstery attachment, followed by using an air purifier to capture any remaining airborne particles, creates a powerful one-two punch for maintaining a cleaner and healthier home environment.
- Mindful renovations: If renovating, choose low-VOC paints, sealants, and flooring materials. Ensure proper ventilation during and after the project.
By incorporating simple habits like decluttering, vacuuming, and using effective air purifiers, we can create healthier living spaces.
