Jhansi Medical College fire: 10 children dead, 16 injured, DCM Pathak said – If necessary, DNA test of babies will be done

Jhansi: Where 10 children died in a fire at Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday night. Today, on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has reached Jhansi with a team of senior officials.

On this fire, UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said that a fire safety audit was conducted in February. Mock drill was also held here in June. How and why this incident happened can be said only after the investigation report comes. So far, bodies of 7 newborns have been identified, while 3 bodies have not been identified yet. Along with this, financial assistance will be provided to the families of newborn babies.

Along with this, Pathak said that instructions have been given to investigate the incident. The local administration has been asked to submit the investigation report within 24 hours. While 10 newborns have died, 7 have been identified and 3 are yet to be identified. DNA testing will be done if necessary. Prima facie it appears to be a short circuit inside the oxygen concentrator. We will set up a helpline number for missing newborns. I am personally monitoring the situation and our thoughts are with the affected family.

On this matter, BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha said that this is a very sad and unfortunate incident. 10 newborn babies died in this fire, about 35 newborn babies have been saved so far. Doctors are providing the best treatment to injured newborns. Are in touch with the doctors of the medical college. Prima facie it appears that short circuit was the cause of the fire.

According to the information received, a fire broke out in a part of the Newborn Care Unit (NICU) between 10:30 and 10:45 pm on Friday, possibly due to a short circuit. Almost all the children who were in the outer part have been saved, but 10 children have been reported dead from the inner part. Rescue work is underway, many children were rescued by fire brigade and rescue team. The treatment of burnt children is going on and information about those who are seriously injured is being collected.

It is reported that there were about 30 children inside the NICU and most of them were saved. The corridor in the NICU was filled with smoke from the fire. The video shows firefighters breaking some glass windows to help in rescue and relief operations. In the visuals emerging from the medical college, patients and their relatives are seen terrified, while a large number of policemen are helping in the rescue and relief operations.

At present, a committee has been formed under the leadership of Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General of Police to investigate this incident. Six fire brigade vehicles were sent and now the fire has been brought under control. He told that 47 newborn babies were admitted in the ward.

Regarding this incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the accident and directed the officials for relief and rescue. Jhansi Police, in a brief statement on social media, said fire brigade teams were sent to the spot, while senior district officials have also reached the medical college. Adityanath said in a post on “X”, “The death of children in an accident in the NICU of the Medical College, Jhansi is extremely sad and heartbreaking.” Yogi said in the post, “Instructions have been given to the district administration and concerned officials to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing.” It is a prayer to Lord Shri Ram to grant salvation to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured.
