Veer Chotrani finishes runner-up at SACC Costa Rica Open
Indian squash player Veer Chotrani capped off an outstanding run at the SACC Costa Rica Open by finishing as the runner-up. The seventh-seeded Chotrani was defeated by fifth-seed Ronaldo Palomino of Colombia in the final, 1-3 (8-11, 11-7, 3-11, 6-11).
Earlier in the tournament, Chotrani displayed his exceptional form by upsetting top seed David Baillargeon of Canada in straight games, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, during the quarterfinals.
This was followed by a hard-fought victory in the semi-finals against England’s Samuel Osborne-Wylde, securing his place in the title clash.
Chotrani, who recently won the White Oaks Cup, has been in sensational form, reaching back-to-back finals on the PSA Challenger Tour this month. Despite falling short in the Costa Rica Open final, his performance has reinforced his status as one of India’s rising stars in squash.
Meanwhile, in the PSA World Tour Bronze-level Ace Malaysia Squash Cup, another Indian player, Abhay Singh, made a breakthrough with his first-ever semi-final appearance.
Singh’s run ended with a loss to Asian Games champion Eain Yow Ng of Malaysia. Along the way, Singh defeated world no. 27 Abdulla Al-Tamimi of Qatar and national champion Velavan Senthilkumar in an all-Indian quarterfinal clash.
India’s No. 1 squash player, Ramit Tandon, also exited in the Ace Malaysia Squash Cup quarterfinals, falling to top seed and world no. 11 Youssef Soliman of Egypt in four competitive games.
