BSNL introduces satellite smartphone connectivity in remote regions

New Delhi: BSNL has announced the rollout of satellite services for providing connectivity to remote regions through posts on X and Instagram. The Direct to Device (D2D) service is the first satellite internet service of its kind for consumers. The D2D service combines services from terrestrial networks and satellites, to provide uninterrupted services in the remotest corners of India, including mountains, forests and villages. The technology is particularly useful in emergency situations, and also allows for UPI payments. The rollout follows the first successful demonstration of direct-to-device communications with a smartphone by Viasat at the India Mobile Congress last month.

The demonstration was conducted by engineers from Viasat and BSNL, using a commercial Android smartphone to deliver an SOS message, routed through geostationary L-band satellites operated by Viasat. The demonstration showcased the feasibility of satellite services to cell phones of Indian customers. The same technology also allows IoT devices and everything from smart watches to smart cars to connect seamlessly to both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Remote industrial machinery and transport operators can also be assured of continuous coverage
