West Indies vs England 5th T20I abandoned due to rain, England wins series 3-1

New Delhi: The rain gods turned out to be deterrent for the fifth and final T20 International match between West Indies and England on Sunday at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. The play was called off after a total of five overs were bowled after England captain Jos Buttler elected to field first in an insignificant match.

A day after setting the tone for an arduous 219-run chase, West Indies openers Evin Lewis (29 runs off 20 balls) and Shai Hope (14 runs off 10 balls) continued their fireworks. Lewis hit three boundaries and a couple of sixes, taking charge against Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton.

When the hosts’ scorecard read 44 for no loss after the completion of the fifth over, the rains interrupted the play, forcing the covers on the field. It rain relentlessly for a few hours, which eventually led the play to be called off after no signs of resumption seemed a possibility.

“Unfortunately, the fifth and final T20I ends as a no result due to persistent showers,” a statement from Cricket West Indies read.

England took the unassailable lead after winning the first three matches of the series to claim the trophy, though they lost the fourth game after failing to defend a 200-plus total. Earlier in the month, West Indies won the three-match ODI series 2-1.

What’s next for England and West Indies in their cricket schedule?

England will next travel to New Zealand to play three Test matches from November 28 to December 18. Their next white-ball assignment is in January next year when they travel to India to play five T20I matches and three ODI matches.

West Indies will next host Bangladesh for a full-fledged tour from November 22 to December 19. Both teams will contest in two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20I matches.
