Attention If you go to a wedding, your account will be emptied, then don't tell me why you didn't tell me earlier.
Wedding season in India is always very special and busy. Lakhs of marriages take place in the months of November and December and this is the time when scammers also intensify their activities. Recently, a new scam has surfaced, which is being called “WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam”. This scam especially targets smartphone and WhatsApp users, and is taking advantage of the wedding season to dupe people.
Wedding Invitation Scam
In this scam, fraudsters send fake wedding cards through WhatsApp. These cards look like real wedding cards, but they contain a hidden dangerous APK file. As soon as the user clicks on this card, an unknown app is downloaded in the phone, which steals the user's data and sends it to scammers. Scammers then use this data to commit fraud in various ways, such as stealing banking information or breaking into social media accounts.
What do the authorities say?
Himachal Pradesh Police has issued a warning about this scam. Police say that such fraud cases are increasing rapidly and people are more sensitive especially during the wedding season. Police have urged people to always keep their devices updated with the latest software and use two-factor authentication to keep their phones and data safe.
How to protect yourself from this scam?
1. Check the file type
If you receive a wedding invitation in the form of an APK file, this is a big sign that it may be a scam. Wedding cards are never sent in APK files. Before clicking on any such link, please check it thoroughly.
2. Verify the contact number
Often wedding cards come to you from a number which you have not saved earlier. In such a situation, it is very important to verify that number. Especially, if the wedding invitation is coming from an unknown number, check it thoroughly.
3. Avoid installing apps from unknown sources
If you use an Android phone, always keep the option of 'Install apps from unknown sources' turned off. This option prevents you from installing apps from unknown sources, which can be a main method for this scam.
4. Keep your phone updated
Always keep your smartphone updated. The latest software patches released by the company are important in terms of security and they protect your phone from new dangerous files and viruses.
The wedding season brings happiness and joy, but during this time it is important to be cautious of the increasing incidents of fraud. To avoid frauds like WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam, vigilance and security measures should be followed. Keep in mind that if you are suspicious about any file or link, avoid clicking on it and adopt every security measure.
