UNICEF teams up with volleyball star Zehra Gunes for children’s rights advocacy
U.N. children’s agency partnered with Zehra Gunes, a national athlete and member of the VakifBank Women’s Volleyball Team, to advocate for children’s rights and welfare.
The collaboration was formalized at a ceremony held at Feriye, attended by Zehra Gunes, UNICEF Türkiye Representative Paolo Marchi and VakifBank Sports Club Vice President Ferkan Merdan.
Zehra Gunes: Champion with heart for children
Gunes expressed her excitement about the collaboration, highlighting her awareness of its significance. She stated that this partnership with UNICEFan organization dedicated to protecting children and their rights, was a major step in her career. She hopes this initiative will make a positive impact on children’s lives.
Gunes emphasized her desire to help children live in a better world and stressed that with UNICEF’s support, they can reach and assist every child. She also mentioned that empowering girls is crucial, as they represent “strong tomorrows.” She believes that every girl should be given the opportunity to succeed and promised to shine a light on their path.
Gunes went on to express her commitment to raising awareness about gender equality, pointing out the importance of providing both boys and girls with equal opportunities to grow. She believes that even small efforts can have a significant impact, particularly in the lives of girls who may need motivation and support. Gunes’ ultimate goal is to help inspire and empower those who need it most.
Reflecting on her personal experience working with children, she recalled a moment when she trained some young girls in volleyball. She remembered showing them how to pass the ball, and the joy on their faces when they learned something new.
Gunes emphasized that children’s pure love and sincerity have always motivated her, and she continues to make an effort to nurture that love in every interaction she has with them.
UNICEF’s vision: Gunes as role model for children
Marchi shared his enthusiasm about the partnership with Gunes, calling her a “champion” both on the court and for children. He highlighted that she serves as an excellent role model, showing that with the right support, children in Türkiye can achieve great things.
Paolo expressed eagerness to collaborate with Gunes in raising awareness about children’s rights and welfare, stressing the importance of providing inspiration and motivation to children, particularly in vulnerable situations.
Paolo also explained that UNICEF’s efforts are particularly focused on helping children who are living in fragile conditions. He believes Gunes’ involvement will significantly increase public attention on these issues, and together they aim to inspire hope and draw attention to critical topics.
Global crises: UNICEF’s commitment to children in conflict zones
Marchi also addressed the ongoing global crises, particularly in conflict zones like Sudan and Palestine. He acknowledged that children are the most affected in these areas, as they often bear the brunt of the suffering.
UNICEF has been working relentlessly to negotiate a cease-fire and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the organization has established offices to provide support.
This partnership between Gunes and UNICEF represents a significant commitment to ensuring that children’s rights are protected and that they are given the opportunities they deserve. Through Gunes’ influence and UNICEF’s mission, this collaboration promises to bring hope and change to countless children across Türkiye and beyond.
