Ex-Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh injured as stones pelted on his car

New Delhi: Former Maharashtra home minister and NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh was injured when stones were thrown at his car in Nagpur district on Monday evening. The attack occurred at around 8pm while Deshmukh was returning to Katol after attending a meeting in Narkhed village.

Unidentified people hurled stones at his vehicle near Belphata on the Jalalkheda Road, resulting in injuries to Deshmukh. He was taken to Katol Civil Hospital for treatment.

NCP (SP) condemned the attack

Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police, Harssh Poddar, confirmed the incident and said that an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators, PTI reported. Senior officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. This incident happened on the final day of campaigning for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly elections.

NCP (SP) spokesperson Vedprakash Arya condemned the attack and called for a thorough inquiry, also demanding police protection for Deshmukh. Arya claimed that the attack, which resulted in a serious head injury to Deshmukh, was a desperate act by the opposition in response to an impending defeat.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Deshmukh was later transferred to Nagpur for further medical care. Deshmukh’s son, Salil Deshmukh, is contesting from the Katol assembly seat on the NCP (SP) ticket, against BJP’s Charansingh Thakur.
