Sri Lanka and Syria : Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake on Monday re-appointed Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister. Amarasuriya was reappointed to the post two days after Dissanayake's party gained majority in Parliament. Dissanayake's leftist coalition won 159 seats in the 225-member parliament in Thursday's general election. Dissanayake has reappointed senior MLA Vijitha Herath to the charge of the Ministry of External Affairs. The appointment marks a significant milestone for Sri Lanka, as Amar Surya becomes the first woman to hold the role of Prime Minister since 2000, and the third woman to hold this prestigious position in the country's history.

Born on 6 March 1970, Harini Neerika Amarasuriya's academic career lasted for ten years at the Open University of Sri Lanka. During this period, he played an important role in the Federation of University Teachers Association, participating in various trade union actions. His dedication to education and advocacy laid a strong foundation for his political career. In 2020, Amar Surya was nominated as a National List Member of Parliament by the National People's Power (NPP) Party. This nomination marked her formal entry into the political arena, where she soon became a prominent voice within and outside the party.
