Travis Head backs Rohit Sharma’s decision to skip first test against Australia
Travis Head supported Rohit Sharma’s decision to miss the first Test for family reasons, while cautioning against underestimating a resilient Indian team led by Jasprit Bumrah in his absence.
New Delhi: Australian batter Travis Head has backed Rohit Sharma’s decision to miss the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Sharma will be absent to be with his wife following the birth of their second child.
Ahead of the first Test starting on November 22, Travis Head expressed his support for Rohit Sharma’s decision, emphasizing that cricketers often miss significant life events and can never reclaim that lost time. Head added that he would have made the same choice if he were in Rohit’s position.
“Hundred per cent, I support Rohit’s decision. I would have done the same in the same situation. We sacrifice a lot of things as a cricketer. We do live a very privileged life and we do also get looked after. But also on the flip side we keep missing important milestones. So, ya, I would do the same thing if I was in his position, you do not get that time back. Hopefully, he returns at some stage in this series,” Travis Head told the press on the sidelines of Australia’s training in Perth.
However, Head cautioned against underestimating the depleted Indian team, noting that recent history shows India’s remarkable ability to deliver exceptional performances when faced with adversity.
“If you look at our history, you would not rule out any Indian team. Last two trips, they had injuries, they have doubts, people have questioned them, but they have pulled out good performances. Whoever they play, it is going to be a strong team,” Head said.
Currently, there is no clarity on when Rohit Sharma will join the Indian team. The best-case scenario suggests he could join midway through the first Test in Perth. If that doesn’t happen, Rohit is likely to link up with the team in Adelaide for the Pink Ball Test.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will take charge of the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.
