Due to improvement in supply, tomato prices are now falling. Due to shortage of quantity, tomato prices have remained very high for the last several days. However, consumers are relieved now that retail prices have come down.
On November 14, the retail price of tomatoes fell by 22 percent across the country. With this cut, the price per kg reached the level of Rs 52. The Consumer Affairs Department said that till a month ago the price of one kg tomato was Rs 67. In October, the inflation rate of tomatoes reached the highest level of 161 percent. In the same period, the price per quintal in Azadpur Model Mandi, the largest market of fruits and vegetables in the country, was Rs 5,883, which has now reduced by 50 percent to Rs 2,969 per quintal. A similar decline has been recorded in the market prices of tomatoes in benchmark markets like Pimpalgaon Maharashtra, Madanapalle, Kolar Karnataka. A commission agent and member of the Azadpur Market Tomato Association said the average wholesale price has dropped from Rs 60 per kg to Rs 32 per kg on Sundays in the last one month. Prices are expected to stabilize in the near future as demand improves. Retail prices of tomatoes have increased by 161 percent in October. Which reached its highest level in 14 months due to supply disruption. Tomato prices rose sharply in October 2024 due to excessive and prolonged rains in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
However, it was reported that Madanapalle and Kolar markets have witnessed low revenue of tomatoes. The fall in prices is due to increased seasonal arrivals of tomatoes from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The existing supply shortage across the country is being met from these areas.
