Michael Hussey becomes the first Australian legend to support Gautam Gambhir, shows a mirror to his former teammates
Former Australian players have had nothing good to say about India head coach Gautam Gambhir since the day he slammed Ricky Ponting for his statement on Virat Kohli. Brad Haddin, Tim Paine, Ponting, and several others have made Gambhir their prime target ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.
They have predicted a tough summer for the Indian coach. However, Michael Hussey differs from his former teammates and heaped massive praise on the legendary batter.
He called Gambhir a great competitor and expects India to display the same qualities under him in Australia.
Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America. He hasn’t been successful, as the team suffered two shocking series defeats. Sri Lanka thumped India by a margin of 2-0 in the ODI series, their first bilateral series win over the Men in Blue in 27 years. New Zealand whitewashed India by 3-0, handing the team its first-ever defeat involving this number of matches.
“Gambhir was a great competitor as a player and he would display this quality as a coach and will go for a win. I have no doubt on him after watching him in the Indian Premier League with different franchises. He loves to win and compete and I am not expecting anything different from this Indian team,” he said.
“India have great fighters and great competitors. His personality will come through with the way he coaches the Indian team. You need to have something like that when you play in Australia. It is not easy to come to Australia and compete with a strong home team,” he added.
The first Test between India and Australia will start on November 22 in Perth.
