The film 'Sukanya' based on 'Kanyashree' scheme is ready for release, a story depicting the dreams of Mamata Banerjee.
Kolkata, 21 November (HS). The film 'Sukanya' based on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's ambitious 'Kanyashree' project is now ready for release. Produced by Sameer Mandal and directed by Ujjwal Mitra, this film will be released tomorrow i.e. Friday. It depicts Mamata Banerjee's journey from opposition leader to becoming the Chief Minister and the struggling story of a single mother, who succeeds in making her daughter self-reliant and empowered.
This film was made at a time when the incidents at RG Kar Medical College had created a lot of stir in the state. The film, which was scheduled to release in August, was then postponed as junior doctors' strikes, demonstrations and public outrage were at its peak in the state. Filmmakers considered this environment 'unfavorable from a commercial point of view' and postponed the release. Now, when the situation has become normal, it is being released in 35 theaters in the state.

In the film, the role of Mamata Banerjee is played by Kannika Banerjee, while the role of the state's former Director General of Police is played by Shantanu Sen. Shantanu Sen is an alumnus of RG Kar Medical College and was vocal against government decisions during the controversial incidents. State minister Swapan Debnath will be seen in another important role in the film.
The story of the film centers on the daughter of a poor widowed mother, who becomes an IPS officer in life, inspired by the benefits of the 'Kanyashree' scheme. Director Ujjwal Mitra said that the film talks deeply about women's rights and empowerment.
Political discussion is also intense regarding the release of the film. The participation of people associated with the ruling party has made it more special. One actor admitted that releasing it during the RG tax case was risky as public anger against the government was at its peak.
Now, through 'Sukanya', not only the success of Mamata Banerjee's 'Kanyashree' program will be shown, but the message of women empowerment will also be brought to life on the big screen.
