I-League clubs urge AIFF to postpone the league

Mumbai Mumbai. The I-League Club Association on Thursday urged the All India Football Federation to suspend the league until the broadcast issue is resolved, as a new schedule comes just a day before the scheduled kickoff of its 18th season. The controversy has come to light. The opening day matches on Friday are scheduled to be played between Srinidhi Deccan FC and Gokulam Kerala FC in Hyderabad at 4 pm, and Inter Kashi will take on Debutant at 7 pm in Kalyani near Kolkata. Sporting Club will be from Bengaluru. But the 12 participating clubs have expressed disappointment over the AIFF's failure to finalize a broadcast deal with Sony Network.

In a strongly worded letter to the AIFF president, the clubs warned that they would “not start the league until we receive confirmation of the broadcast by 8 pm on Thursday.” He wrote, “I-League Clubs request you to send us confirmation by 8 PM tonight to appoint Sony Network as the official broadcaster of I-League 24-25, failing which I-League Clubs will be banned from the I-League starting tomorrow. The league will not start as per schedule.”

“Adding to our disappointment, huge fines averaging Rs 10 lakh per club due to failure in club licensing were informed to the clubs last night,” the letter said. “Despite repeated assurances by the Chairman that no infrastructure penalty would be imposed on clubs, fines of up to Rs 25 lakh have been imposed on several clubs. The issue of stadium infrastructure was discussed in detail, where the Chairman and The clubs said that since the stadiums in India are government-owned and the clubs have no direct control over them, and they only rent the stadiums for a limited period, it is unfair to impose a penalty on the clubs for this.” The clubs further clarified their position on the deal with the broadcaster.
