Why Shubman Gill is not playing in IND vs AUS 1st Test? BCCI provides update

New Delhi: Indian batter Shubman Gill on Friday missed the first Test match against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update over his absence from the Indian playing XI in the opener of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Gill was expected to bat at No.3 for India after having an impressive debut down under four years ago, when he opened the batting order. However, the 25-year-old top order batter suffered a thumb injury during India’s match simulation in Perth in the build up to the five-match Test series.

“Shubman Gill sustained a left thumb injury during Day 2 of match simulation at The WACA. He was not considered for selection for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” BCCI issued a statement on the player’s availability.

“The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress on a daily basis,” the statement further read.

Gill has played 29 Test matches for India, having scored 1800 runs at an average of 36.73 with the help of five hundreds and seven fifties. He made 259 runs in three matches at 51.80 during his previous tour to Australia in 2010-21. He scored crucial 91 runs to set the tone in India’s 328-run chase in the series-decider match in Brisbane.

India hand debut to Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana

India have fielded a four-pronged pace attacks with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana making their first appearances in the whites for the Indian team. Stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack with Mohammed Siraj to complement him for the responsibility with the new ball.

India has decided to play all-rounder Washington Sundar as the lone spinner, meaning senior players Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja remain on the bench for the first Test.
