After America, Gautam Adani now surrounded in India, Congress accused of bribery

Guwahati: Gautam Adani is continuously in the headlines after being accused of corruption by a US court. Now a political war is being seen in the country's politics regarding this matter. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is also attacking the Central Government on this matter. Meanwhile, the state president of Assam Congress has demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) inquiry into the investment made by Azure Power in the state.

US prosecutors have accused Azure Power of colluding with Gautam Adani to bribe Indian officials to get solar power contracts.

Opposition parties have demanded a JPC investigation into the allegations against billionaire businessman Gautam Adani.

Congress state unit president Bhupen Kumar Bora claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma may have taken bribe to award solar power projects in the state to Azure Power.

Sharma had inaugurated the project two years ago.

Addressing reporters here, Bora said, “Our party has already demanded a JPC to investigate the allegations made against Adani. We demand that Azure Power projects in Assam should also be brought under the purview of the JPC after it is formed.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said the need of the hour is for a JPC inquiry into all aspects of Adani Group's functioning, including its investments abroad and institutional erosion in India.

Referring to the Azure Power projects in Assam, the Congress state unit president claimed that the Chief Minister may have taken bribes to approve these projects.

He said, “Gautam Adani came to Assam and met our Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma in February 2022. In July the same year, the state government had signed an agreement to purchase power from Azure Power for 25 years.”

Bora said, “According to the findings of the US investigation, we have reason to believe that bribes were paid here also. We demand that along with the investigation of Adani's transactions, the Azure Power projects in Assam should also be investigated by the JPC.”
