Can Air Pollution Affect Weight Gain and Hormonal Health?
NEW DELHI New Delhi: Amid poor air quality in the national capital, doctors on Friday warned that air pollutants can also lead to weight gain, increase obesity rates and affect hormonal health, apart from causing respiratory and cardiovascular problems. The air quality in Delhi-NCR was recorded in the 'very poor' category on Friday morning, with a thin layer of smog blanketing the region. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's average air quality index (AQI) at 7.15 am stood at 371. AQI levels remained above 400 and between 450 in seven areas of Delhi. AQI was 410 in Anand Vihar, 411 in Bawana, 426 in Jahangirpuri, 402 in Mundka, 410 in Nehru Nagar, 402 in Shadipur and 413 in Wazirpur. Air pollution can affect weight gain by altering metabolism and can also affect hormonal health. Air pollution causes metabolic disorders which can lead to weight gain. It can also cause inflammation which leads to obesity,” Dr Shaili Sharma, senior consultant and associate director, obstetrics and gynaecology, Cloudnine Hospital, told IANS.
“Air pollution can promote sedentary behavior because it can cause certain respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath, which can restrict physical activity and lead to weight gain. It also increases insulin resistance, which can lead to Weight gain increases and obesity increases,” said Sharma. Recent studies suggest that chronic exposure to air pollution, which contains particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, can lead to systemic inflammation and metabolic disturbances – the main causes of weight gain and obesity. .
