Should I give my in-laws money to buy a house and live together?

I am contemplating whether to contribute VND3-4 billion (US$118,022-$157,363) to my in-laws’ house fund and reside with them, which might give the impression that I am dependent on my wife’s family.

My wife and I have been together for eight years and have two young children. We initially lived with my parents, but conflicts between my wife and mother were frequent, leading us to purchase a small apartment for our independence a few years ago.

As the apartment’s value has increased, we are now considering buying a house, and my parents might add over VND2 billion to our funds. With our apartment potentially selling for VND3 billion, our total would reach VND5 billion. Still, finding a suitable house near the city center within this budget is challenging.

My wife is keen on having her parents move closer to the city for their convenience and to ensure they are well cared for. If they sell their rural land, it might bring in around VND5 billion. I have considered borrowing additional funds, combining them with what my parents will provide, and offering the total sum to my wife’s family to purchase a large, well-located house with an elevator, after which we would move in with my in-laws.

I am comfortable living with my wife’s family, as they are kind and respectful, and it seems like a way to reciprocate the kindness my wife extended while living with my family. Nevertheless, I am hesitant due to concerns about my parents’ opinions and potential legal issues should we ever decide to separate.

What would you do in my situation?
