In an exclusive interview with India.com, Rannvijay Sinha opened up on facing criticism for Roadies and revealed whether its scripted or not.
Rannvijay Singha may be an actor who appeared in films like Action Replayy and web series like Mismatched, but he’s synonymous with reality show, MTV Roadies. He is the winner of Season 1 and hosted the next 12 seasons. The show when released, became popular among youth for adventure, bikes, fitness and more. However, it was also criticised for foul language and confrontational style, especially used by judges Raghu and Rajiv. Addressing this, Rannvijay spoke how parents were disturbed when their kids would come and open up on show like Roadies. He also revealed that the show was criticised because it used to address taboo subjects that no one dared to talk about.
Rannvijay Sinha on Roadies backlash
In an exclusive interview with India.com, Rannvijay spoke about the early criticism faced by Roadies. “These days, everyone has an easy platform to express their opinions, whether they are qualified to or not. Back then, Roadies was the only show where the youth would come and share what was going on in their lives. Now we talk about being progressive, equal rights for women, racism, so many other issues. While these are the part of the current culture, we were addressing them back then and it was unacceptable for some.”
Rannvijay also shared how it was unsettling for families to see kids talking about their issues. “It was disturbing parents that their kid would go out and tell that he/she has been molested by a family member or that their father is an alcoholic and neglecting the family. At that time in India, these were taboo subjects that no one dared to talk about. We were doing that then, respecting women, respecting our country. Now you can hear every podcast is about that.” the actor added.
Rannvijay Sinha on ‘scripted’ reality shows
Rannvijay also broke his silence on whether reality shows are scripted or not. The actor revealed, “Itne ache toh script writers humare pass hai nahi. Aur itne ache actors toh yeh hote bhi nhi hai. We go and audition people and those guys are mostly first-timers in the media industry. Asking them to act in a certain way and to nail it just doesn’t happen.
Also, sharing how important it is to create mental pressure on contestants during the audition process, Rannvijay said, “We are so familiar with what kind of people we need in our show. Only if I put you under pressure, within 1 hour, you would be compelled to say something. We need to create pressure on people to reveal certain things- that is the tactic.”
Meanwhile, Rannvijay Singha is being seen as the host for another adventure reality show Mystery Hunter. It is a first-of-its-kind series that explores the country’s lesser-known mysteries, astonishing legends, and hidden treasures of great significance. The show airs every Tuesday 9 pm on Discovery and discovery+.
