Gautam Gambhir to return to India from Australia midway through Test series
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir will return to India from Australia on Tuesday, November 26, in the middle of the ongoing five-test series for personal reasons.
According to reports, he is expected to join the team before the second Test in Adelaide, which starts on December 6.
India defeated Australia by 295 runs in the series opener in Perth to take a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the Perth Test for the birth of his second child, has reached Australia and was seen practising.
“Gautam Gambhir has informed us that he is travelling back home and will be available for the second Test. He has cited personal reasons, and the apex body of Indian cricket has agreed,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying to The Indian Express on Monday.
The visitors will travel from Perth to Canberra to play a two-day pink-ball warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI starting Saturday, November 30. Gambhir will skip the contest.
Gambhir was under pressure after India lost 0-3 against New Zealand at home. Fans and former players slammed the Test series whitewash and questioned Gambhir’s coaching style. However, Sourav Ganguly came out in support and urged the critics to give him time as he is still new in his current role.
