Home turf, high stakes for PV Sindhu and co

The Syed Modi International 2024 badminton tournament kicks off in Lucknow today, promising intense action on the courts of the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.

As a BWF Super 300 event, the competition features some of India’s top players like PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and the dynamic men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will headline the tournament as they aim to end their respective title droughts.

The matches will be held at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium and will be live-streamed on the BWF TV YouTube channel and telecast on DD Sports in India.

PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen lead singles hopes

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, struggling to rediscover her peak form, will spearhead India’s women’s singles campaign.

The former world champion last won a title at the Singapore Open in July 2022.

With a world ranking that has slipped to No. 19, Sindhu aims to capitalize on home conditions to clinch her third Syed Modi International crown.

She begins her campaign against 17-year-old compatriot Anmol Kharb, a rising star with impressive wins at the Belgium and Poland International Challenge tournaments this year.

In men’s singles, Lakshya Sen, the 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, seeks to end his title drought, with his last victory dating back to the Canada Open in 2023.

The 23-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance this year, including semifinal appearances at the All England Championships and Paris Olympics.

Starting his campaign against a qualifier, Lakshya hopes to go all the way in Lucknow.

Doubles stars aim for glory

In men’s doubles, Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are strong contenders.

Fresh from their semifinal finish at the China Masters, the duo is expected to shine under home conditions as they aim to add another title to their impressive resume.

Women’s doubles sees top-seeded Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto competing alongside Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.

Both pairs are likely to dominate the field, with fans anticipating an all-Indian final. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will lead the Indian charge, joined by seasoned campaigners B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy.

Spotlight on rising stars

The tournament also provides a platform for young Indian talents to showcase their skills.

Priyanshu Rajawat, part of India’s Thomas Cup-winning team, and Malvika Bansod, currently ranked world No. 36, are among the promising players looking to make a mark.

Other notable names include 2023 World Junior Championships bronze medallist Ayush Shetty, Odisha Masters winner Sathish Karunakaran, and Unnati Hooda, a recent champion at the Abu Dhabi Masters.
