This is impossible. Ego cannot be renounced because ego has no existence. Ego is just a thought: it has no essence. It's nothing – it's just pure nothing. You give it reality by believing in it. You can lose faith and reality disappears, vanishes.
Ego is a kind of lack. Ego is there because you don't know yourself. The moment you know yourself, you will find no ego. Ego is like darkness; Darkness has no positive existence of its own; It is simply lack of light. You can't fight darkness, or can you? You cannot throw darkness out of the room; You can't take it out, you can't bring it in. You cannot do anything directly with darkness, for this you have to do something with light. If you light then there will be no darkness; If you turn off the light, there is darkness.
Darkness is the absence of light, so is ego: the absence of self-knowledge. You cannot abandon it. You have been told again and again: “Kill your ego”–and this statement is clearly absurd, because something that does not exist cannot be renounced. And even if you try to renounce that which is not present, you will create a new ego – the ego of being humble, the ego of being egoless, the ego of the person who thinks that he has renounced his ego. Gave it. It will be a new kind of darkness again.
No, I do not ask you to give up your ego. On the contrary, I would say try to see where the ego is? Look into its depths; Try to find out where it is, or whether it exists in reality or not. Before sacrificing anything, its presence should be confirmed.
But don't go against it from the beginning. If you resist it you will not be able to see it deeply. There is no need to go against anything. Ego is your experience – it may seem obvious but it is your experience. Your entire life revolves around incidents of ego. It may all be a dream, but for you it is absolutely true.
There is no need to oppose this. Dive deep into it, go within. Entering it means bringing awareness into your home, bringing light into darkness. Be careful, be alert. Look at the ways of the ego, how it works, how it operates. And you will be surprised; The deeper you go into it the less it becomes visible. And when you enter into your innermost center, you will find something completely different which is not the ego. Which is egolessness. This is the feeling of self, the pinnacle of self – this is divinity. You now cease to exist as a separate entity; You are no longer a deserted island, you are part of the whole.
